13:00 – 19:00
Back to the 80's is the Spotify playlist of music from the 80s: 1,379 tracks from 163 albums in the collection, released 1980 to 1989, topped up with the biggest hits of those years from the Dutch Top 40 (the decade's top 100 and each year's top 20), such as (I've Had) The Time Of My Life (Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes), Nikita (Elton John) and How 'Bout Us (Champaign). A new six-hour block every six hours, put in order by sound. Artists that come by often: UB40, Madonna, Prince, Phil Collins and Lionel Richie.
Block 13:00-19:00: 81 tracks, 364 minutes, from Private Investigations (Dire Straits) to I'm Gonna Be Strong (Blue Angel, Cyndi Lauper). 36 of them charted in the Dutch Top 40. Purple Rain by Prince was number 1 for four weeks, this week in 1984. Cold and rainy outside, so a calmer block.

How the playlist is put together
Back to the 80's runs on the same generator as Time to Play, with a different pool: the tracks from 1980 to 1989 in the collection, by their first release (a hit from those years on a later compilation counts; without a date the album's year applies), plus the biggest hits of the time from the Dutch Top 40: the decade's top 100 and each year's top 20. A new block every six hours, picked truly at random (what just played sits out for a while, every record at most once a week, an artist at most once per block), put in order by sound.
The charts of the time, with each record's run, are in the Dutch Top 40 decade chart of the 80s.

By decade
The same approach, by decade: the tracks from those years on the shelves, topped up with the biggest hits of the time from the Dutch Top 40 (the decade's top 100 and each year's top 20). A new block every six hours, ordered by sound. Time to Play, the list from the whole collection, is under Playlist in the menu.
Keep exploring
If you have landed here, you probably want to keep going: an album, an artist, a week in the Dutch Top 40 or a concert.
Frequently asked questions
What is Back to the 80's?
Back to the 80's is the playlist with the music from 1980 to 1989: the tracks from those years in the collection (by their first release, otherwise the album's year), topped up with the biggest hits of the time from the Dutch Top 40. A new block every six hours.
How is the playlist put together?
The same way as Time to Play: every block picked at random within fixed rules (nobody twice in a block, every record at most once a week, put in order by sound). From the Dutch Top 40, the decade's top 100 and each year's top 20 take part.
What music is in Back to the 80's?
How is it different from the Dutch Top 40 decade overview?
The Dutch Top 40 decade overview is a ranking: the biggest hits of the 80s, computed from all the weekly charts of those years, to read and compare. Back to the 80's is a playlist to listen to: album tracks from those years in the collection with the biggest hits in between, compiled afresh every six hours and put in order by sound.
How often does the playlist change?
A new block starts every six hours; a block lasts about six hours, the last track sometimes runs on a few minutes until the next one begins. The top shows the current block and the moment it was compiled, and "Now" and "Up next" move along with the time, also while the page stays open. That is the block's schedule, not your own player.
Can you save Back to the 80's to your own Spotify?
Yes. The Open in Spotify button at the top opens the playlist in Spotify; there you save it to your library with Follow or the plus button. It is the same list, which refills itself every six hours.
What does the time next to a track mean?
The moment that track starts within the block. The playing track shows moving bars, played tracks are dimmed, and "Now" and "Up next" at the top follow along.
What do the badges next to a track mean?
A Dutch Top 40 badge shows the peak position of that record in the Dutch Top 40; point at it for the year and the number of weeks. NL marks a Dutch-language track. On the right are the year (first release, Dutch Top 40 or album, whichever fits best) and the length.
How do you play the playlist?
With the Play here button at the top; the playlist then plays in the player at the bottom and keeps going while you browse on. Open in Spotify opens the same list in Spotify itself.
